Christopher Landon, the director of the Groundhog Day-inspired horror film Happy Death Day, has signed on to produce and likely direct an adaptation of the horror novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism, which is written by Grady Hendrix. Endeavor Content beat out several suitors for the rights to the book.
Described as Beaches meets Heathers meets The Exorcist, the novel is set in 1988 and focuses on the relationship of two best friends, Abby and Gretchen. After an evening of skinny dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act different, and Abby slowly begins to believe her friend has become demonically possessed.
The girls must then face the question: Is their friendship strong enough to beat the Devil?
The book was named one of the best 50 horror novels of all time by Paste despite only being a couple of years old. Jenna Lamia (90210) is penning the script, while author Hendrix is on board as a creative consultant.
Although mostly known as an author, Hendrix has penned the horror movie Mohawk, as well as a film titled Satanic Panic which is due for release soon. This also isn’t the only adaptation of his in the works, as his novel Horrorstor, set in a haunted IKEA store, is being developed as as series by Josh Schwartz and Gail Berman.
If Landon does indeed choose to direct, it would seem a good choice. Happy Death Day was a fun mix of modern horror combined with classical nods and tropes, and thus a very 80s-inspired horror novel also mixing styles would seem a perfect fit.
