While there is currently a large, comic book-shaped hole on Netflix right now after the cancellation of most of their Marvel shows such as Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, we should know better than to doubt the streaming giant that has changed the face of TV over the last decade.
It was back in August of 2017 that Netflix purchased Millarworld, the comic book publishing firm Mark Millar created that was behind titles such as Kick-Ass and Kingsman. The deal was mostly so that Netflix could have exclusive rights to create adaptations from the Millarworld library, and that’s exactly what they are moving ahead with in the wake of their Marvel cancellations.
Deadline reports that the streaming platform will produce a film adaptation of Reborn, a comic series written by Millar and pencilled by Greg Capullo. The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay is slated to direct, while Sandra Bullock is attached to produce and possibly star as well.
The sci-fi comic series follows an eighty year-old woman named Bonnie Black who dies in New York, but is immediately reborn, young again, in a fantastical world of magic and monsters known as Adystria. Bonnie is pulled into the afterlife’s long-waged war between good and evil, fighting alongside previously lost loved ones such as her late father.
When Netflix acquired the rights to Millarworld a few years ago, Reborn was instantly seen as one of the major adaptations fans wanted to see, and it sounds like it has everything in place to potentially be a huge blockbuster hit if done right. Getting a kinetic visual filmmaker such as McKay on board is a fantastic start.
Bullock is of course just coming off a successful collaboration with Netflix with Bird Box, a film that wasn’t received well critically but turned out to be a cultural hit and one of the most-streamed original films ever for Netflix.
The other Millarworld adaptations that are in the works for Netflix are Jupiter’s Legacy from former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. Deknight, and an Empress film written by Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is A Loser).
Expect to hear plenty more about Netflix adaptations of Millarworld properties as the streaming giant seeks to rebuild its comic book content.
