Although Captain Marvel is less than two months away, Brie Larson is already locking up deals for future non-MCU projects. Larson and Lynette Howell Taylor, under their 51 Entertainment banner, just made a deal with Netflix that includes Larson’s next starring role in a film titled Lady Business, as well as the worldwide rights to her directorial debut, Unicorn Store.
Larson may also direct Lady Business, but that’s not for certain yet. She and Taylor acquired the rights to the project back in August 2017. The film is based on the Fast Company article by John Paul Titlow, which tells the true story of two female entrepreneurs who had to invent a third male company founder to be taken seriously in the business world.
There’s currently no indication on whether Larson will play the fictional version of Penelope Gazin or Kate Dwyer, the real-life entrepreneurs, or who will be her co-star. However, more is known about Unicorn Store, which has already wrapped filming and will star Joan Cusack, Bradley Whitford, Mamoudou Athie, Hamish Linklater, and Samuel L. Jackson.
It is a dramedy based on a script penned by Samantha McIntyre and revolves around a woman who moves back in with her parents before receiving an invitation to a store that will test her ideas of what it really means to grow up. Larson had initially auditioned for a role in the film years ago but didn’t get the part, only to get the chance to direct when circumstances would have prevented it from getting made.
Larson said of the film: “It’s not an easy time in the world right now so I hope that, in the old tradition of films being a form of escapism and a way to dream, this film can do that”.
Unicorn Store will premiere on Netflix on Friday, April 5, while Larson can next be seen as the titular Captain Marvel when it hits cinemas on Friday, March 8.
