Billy Eichner, one of the funniest comedic performers working today who always steals the show in any supporting role he takes, is deservedly getting the chance to headline his own movie. He will write and star in a romantic comedy at Universal that is being produced by Judd Apatow and will be directed by Nick Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall).
The film will reportedly follow two men with commitment problems who are attempting a relationship together. This may count as the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio, as classics like The Birdcage and In & Out don’t really fall into the romcom genre, while last year’s Love, Simon does but isn’t exactly in the same vein of your typical Apatow-esque comedies such as Trainwreck or Knocked Up.
Those films usually treat sex and relationships frankly within their comedic framework, and Eichner’s film sounds likely to do the same. The film will serve as a reunion of sorts for Eichner and Stoller, who worked together on Netflix’s Friends From College. This news also comes less than a week after Apatow’s next directorial effort was revealed to be a film with SNL’s Pete Davidson.
Eichner’s energy has always been infectious, from his incredibly hilarious Funny Or Die show Billy On The Street, to his roles in shows such as Parks & Recreation and Difficult People. He’s also got two roles at Disney lined up: the voice of meerkat Timon in Jon Favreau‘s Lion King remake, and the Christmas film Noelle, in which he stars alongside Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader.
That film is expected to debut on Disney+ at some point, whenever the streaming platform launches, which could be towards the end of this year. But for now we’ll wait for more news regarding this new comedy project, including deeper plot details and who will be starring opposite Eichner.
