Armie Hammer, Gary Oldman, and Evangeline Lilly have signed on to star in the upcoming thriller Dreamland, which is being described as an “opioid thriller” and hails from writer-director Nicholas Jarecki, and will be the follow-up to his 2012 political thriller Arbitrage, which starred Richard Gere. The project is being billed as the first film to tackle the international opioid crisis.
In the film, three stories about the opioid world collide: a drug trafficker arranges a smuggling operation between Canada and the US with multiple cartels, an architect recovering from an addiction tracks down the truth behind her son’s involvement with narcotics, and a university professor battles unexpected revelations about his research employer – a drug company with deep government influence.
It’s being described as a “thinking person’s gangster tale of high and low”. Jarecki said of the project: “The devastating impact of the opioid crisis reaches all corners of society. Gary, Armie and Evangeline are the perfect performers to bring the human face of this epidemic to audiences everywhere”.
Principal photography is actually already underway in Montreal and Detroit, and producer Lisa Wilson will attempt to sell the project to buyers at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival. She should be able to do so quickly, as Jarecki’s Arbitrage, upon release, set the record as the highest-grossing independent day and date release of all time.
