The first trailer for MGM’s female-led remake of Frank Oz‘s 1988 comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels has arrived. This new version is titled The Hustle, and stars Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as a pair of con artists – one low rent and the other high class – who team up to take down the rotten men who have wronged them.
Hathaway stars as British con woman who excels at swindling simple-minded rich folk, while Wilson uses her similar gifts on smaller, lower-rung grifts. After meeting, the two team up to steal from the men who have done them dirty, though Wilson’s character needs a few lessons in the art of the con.
The above trailer is a bit hit-and-miss, with a few jokes landing, but a few too many all-too-familiar lazy jabs at Wilson’s weight. Still, it will be interesting to compare to the original film, which starred Michael Caine and Steve Martin. Chris Addison (In The Loop) directs, with Stanely Shapiro, Paul Henning, Sale Launer, and Jac Schaefer all having a hand in the screenplay.
While that many writers involved in a screenplay is never the best sign, let’s hope that The Hustle isn’t a dud trying to swindle audiences out of their hard-earned cash. The film hits cinemas Friday, May 10.
