Josh Brolin Joins Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ | Film News

Josh Brolin is the latest big name to join Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune, which is quickly assembling one of the best casts out there. Timotheé Chalamet is set to star. Big names such as Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, and Zendaya have also joined the cast over the last few months.

Variety reports that Brolin will play the role of Gurney Halleck. Halleck is protagonist Paul Atreides’ weapons teacher and mentor. The film will be an adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s seminal 1965 sci-fi novel. Villeneuve has co-written the script alongside Eric Roth (A Star Is Born) and Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).

Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides and his family’s contentious stewardship over the desert planet Arrakis; the galaxy’s source of a highly valuable drug. However competing families contest their ruling, which leads to betrayal and rebellion.

Brolin’s addition to the cast is just another feather in Dune‘s cap. By the time the film comes out, every major name in Hollywood might be involved in the film in some way. After Villeneuve delivered the exceptional Blade Runner 2049 – although it sadly didn’t perform too well at the box office – it will be fascinating to see what he can do with another classic sci-fi property.

It will be interesting to track whether mainstream audiences are still interested in a sci-fi epic. One thing we know (almost) for sure; this version of Dune won’t be as bad as David Lynch‘s doomed 1984 version (right?).
