Last year’s The Haunting Of Hill House was one of Netflix’s best new shows. Inspired by the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, the series followed the Crain family, exploring their terrifying childhood years growing up in the deadly house, and the trials they face as haunted adults decades later. The only thing disappointing to fans was that there wasn’t any more of the show.
Until now! Netflix has renewed the show as an anthology series. The next instalment will focus on a new story and a fresh set of characters. Director/creator Mike Flanagan will also return, and he’ll be tackling another literary classic – Henry James‘ The Turn Of The Screw.
The 1898 novella focuses on a governess who, while caring for two children at a remote estate, becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted.
This season will be titled The Haunting Of Bly Manor, and is part of a multi-year overall deal between Flanagan, Netflix, and producer Trevor Macy. The films Gerald’s Game and Hush have already been released to the streaming platform as a part of the deal. Netflix also helped finally release Flanagan’s long-shelved film Before I Wake.
Flanagan and Macy said in a statement:
“Netflix has been an important part of our story, and we’re proud to have worked with them on The Haunting of Hill House […] They’ve enabled and supported a great deal of our work and we look forward to much more”.
Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix, added:
“Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are masterful at creating authentically frightening stories that leave audiences on the edge of their seats, but unable to look away. We’re excited to continue our partnership with them on The Haunting series and future projects to come”.
This is clearly great news. It will be fascinating to see what Flanagan can come up with for the second season and beyond. Bly Manor should arrive sometime in 2020.
