Annapurna Pictures has released the first trailer for Olivia Wilde‘s directorial debut, Booksmart. The coming-of-age comedy had its world premiere this weekend at SXSW and received an overwhelmingly positive response, and the very funny trailer backs it up.
The film revolves around two high school best friends, played by Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever. About to finish high school and head off for college, they plan to shed their “good girl” image and go out with a bang. While many compared the film to Superbad, others noted that it acknowledges new social norms and captures the spirit of modern day youth.
Wilde directed the film from a script penned by Emily Halpern & Sarah Haskins (Trophy Wife), Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me), and Kate Silberman (Set It Up). Feldstein and Dever have stolen the show in supporting roles recently, but this deservedly gives them a chance to shine as leads. Even judging from the two-minute clip above, they look to have great comedic chemistry.
Booksmart should quickly become one of the most anticipated films of the year. It also stars Lisa Kudrow, Jason Sudeikis, Jessica Williams, and Will Forte. It hits cinemas this summer on Friday, May 24.
