Just as Apple are reeling in big stars for their Apple+ launch to seriously compete with Netflix, Disney are doing the same. Except, their big stars are animated. The Mouse House is developing Monsters At Work, an animated series based on the Monsters Inc./Monsters University world set to premiere in 2020.
John Goodman and Billy Crystal are set to reprise their beloved roles as Sulley and Mike, respectively. The series will reportedly pick up six months after the story of the original movie, with the Monsters Inc. power plant now harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis, instead of screams.
Although Goodman and Crystal are returning, the series will focus on Tylor Tuskmon, an eager young mechanic on the Monsters Inc. team, who dreams of making his way up to the factory Laugh Floor to become a Jokester alongside his idols Mike and Sulley.
Ben Feldman will voice Tylor, while the series will also star Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Henry Winkler (Barry), Lucas Neff (Raising Hope), and Aisha Tyler (Archer). John Ratzenberger, Jennifer Tilly, and Bob Peterson, who all voiced characters in the original film, will also return.
Considering the amount of reboots/remakes/revivals around right now, a Monsters Inc. series isn’t exactly a surprise. Disney needs subscribers and knows that going back to the well and bringing back classic characters fans love is essentially a surefire way to make money. It may come at the expense of creating new classic characters, but that’s a problem for tomorrow.
It will be interesting to see how much Sulley and Mike are actually in the series, considering Crystal, and especially Goodman’s, schedule.
Kat Good and Rob Gibbs will direct the series. Monsters At Work will arrive on Disney+ sometime in 2020.
