Love, Simon was a heartwarming romcom hit last year, and Disney is looking to keep the love flowing. A Love, Simon TV series is reportedly in the works for the Disney+ streaming platform. The film was originally based on Becky Albertalli‘s book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and revolves around the life of a closeted high school student.
The film was notable as the first film by a major Hollywood studio to focus on a gay teenage romance.
Greg Berlanti, director of the film, will not return for the series due to the big overall deal he signed with Warner Bros. Television. There he oversees shows such as Riverdale and the CW superhero franchises. This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are reportedly being eyed to run the show.
Disney was able to secure the Love, Simon rights after acquiring 20th Century Fox. The film was released by Fox 2000, which focused on teen and YA content such as The Hate U Give. Unfortunately, Disney shuttered the Fox 2000 unit, and they haven’t exactly been the most inclusive studio in the past, so there might be some wariness here.
However, more LGBTQ stories being told is a huge positive. Love, Simon was a genuinely funny and kind breath of fresh air. If the series can capture even half of the joy the film had, it will be a success. There’s no word yet on when the series is expected to launch, nor if any of the movie cast will return. Disney+ is expected to arrive in the autumn.
