Bond 25 continues to be Hollywood’s white whale. Multiple directors and screenwriters have been involved in the project, and we can now add another to the list. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator and star of Fleabag, is the latest screenwriter to take a crack at the script. She’s been hired to reportedly “liven up” the screenplay at the specific request of star Daniel Craig.
Craig reportedly wants a touch of Waller-Bridge’s trademark wit to spice the film up. That wit has been on full display in Fleabag, but Waller-Bridge also has spy experience, having penned the BBC spy-thriller adaptation, Killing Eve.
As mentioned, she is the latest name brought on board to help Bond 25 along. Scott Z. Burns was hired in February to overhaul Neal Purvis and Robert Wade‘s original script, which had already caused prior tensions. Danny Boyle then left the director’s chair mere weeks before production was set to begin, with Cary Joji Fukunaga replacing him.
Bond 25‘s release date was shifted from a Valentine’s Day release to April 8, 2020 to accommodate all the changes.
Usually all these tumultuous changes would signal a disaster of a film, but there’s so many talented people involved that there’s still a chance it could be incredible. Fukunaga, Burns, and Waller-Bridge is a great creative tandem, while, according to Collider, Rami Malek is a lock to play the villain.
Throw in the fact that this is likely Craig’s final outing as 007, and Bond 25 has all the ingredients to be a perfect swansong for him. But can the film get out of its own way?
The film is still currently slated for its April 8, 2020 release. We’ll wait and see if that holds.
