David S. Goyer, veteran Hollywood screenwriter known on the likes of The Dark Knight and Blade, is reportedly working on a Hellraiser revival. Goyer is producing and penning the script for Gary Barber‘s Spyglass Media Group. Per Variety, the film is being fast-tracked for worldwide theatrical distribution.
The original 1987 film, written and directed by Clive Barker, revolved around the resurrection of Frank, who had opened the door to an alternate dimension and had his body torn to pieces by the franchise’s most famous character, Pinhead. The film was originally based on Barker’s own novella, The Hellbound Heart.
While there have been many Hellraiser sequels over the years, this would mark the first remake – or whatever term they’re using this time. Goyer said of the project:
“I’ve been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and The Hellbound Heart novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral”.
Although Goyer has directed a few films, he won’t be doing so here, so the hunt for a director is on. There will likely be a host of names interested in helming what was probably at this point an entry point into horror for many of them.
We’ll wait for more news regarding the project. As Goyer begins work on the new Hellraiser, another film he wrote – Terminator: Dark Fate – hits cinemas later this year, on Friday, November 1.
