Hailee Steinfeld will star in the romantic comedy Voicemails For Isabelle. The romcom has been preemptively picked up by Sony, and Sharon Maguire (Bridget Jones’ Diary) is in talks to direct.
Details are currently pretty scarce. Leah McKendrick has written the spec script, which is being described as a romcom for the 21st century revolving around a young woman navigating the dating scene in Los Angeles. If you’re wondering how a film can be both a romcom for the 21st century yet reference voicemails in the title, then you’re not alone. That will probably be plot related.
After breaking out in 2010 with True Grit, which earned her an Oscar nomination at age 14, Steinfeld went missing for a while. She often took on supporting roles in films like the Pitch Perfect sequels. However, the last few years have revitalised her career. She starred in The Edge Of Seventeen and Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, while also voicing Spider Gwen in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
This project has a chance to continue her momentum. Maguire has already directed one cornerstone of the romcom genre with Bridget Jones’ Diary. She also directed the second sequel, Bridget Jones’ Baby. This should be a good pairing. We’ll wait for more details.
