Streaming giant Netflix has acquired the rights to the hit video game Tom Clancy’s The Division and is getting into the video game movie business.
The Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ adaptation of its hit video game will have Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal star in the live action movie. David Leitch, the filmmaker behind Deadpool 2 and the upcoming Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw will direct this feature.
The deal was announced on Monday at E3 in Los Angeles during Ubisoft’s presentation on stage. The film has been in development with Chastain joining in 2016 and the director Leitch following in 2018.
The plotline is: “In the third-person shooter game, which set in dystopian New York City after a smallpox pandemic, the player is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, aka The Division, and is searching for the origins of the outbreak.”
After the release of the game, Ubisoft said the online-only title broke the studio’s record for the highest number of first-day sales. It has generated over $300 million globally and has reached 20 million gamers. A sequel of Division titled Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 was released on March 15.
Gyllenhaal is also producing the project with the involvement of Ubisoft which developed and published the game with Red Storm Entertainment.
