Two rising stars are set for a big film at Disney. Lakeith Stanfield and Olivia Cooke will star in an untitled fairy tale movie for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before director Susan Johnson will direct from a script by Cat Vasko.
Plot details are being mostly kept under wraps, but the story reportedly follows a prince who sets off on a journey with his princess-to-be in order to lift a spell that’s made her boring. Along the way, they realise they’re actually in one of the Grimm fairy tales, and they’ve disrupted the entire fairy tale universe with their quest.
The film is being described as a subversive take on fairy tales, similar to Shrek and Enchanted. It’s also reportedly similar to a recent spec script that was floating around titled Fairy Godmother, which is now in development at MGM.
It’s an interesting idea, and it’s clear that even with their new streaming platform, Disney will stick to the sorts of family-friendly projects they’re known for. Stanfield and Cooke are two great actors who, over the last five years, have stole the show in films such as Sorry To Bother You and Get Out for Stanfield, and Thoroughbreds and Ready Player One for Cooke.
It’s also a great project for Johnson. She made To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before a hit, and also just signed on to direct an adaptation of Annie Hartnett‘s acclaimed novel Rabbit Cake for Amazon Studios. That film was penned by Black List scribe Allie Hagan, and Vasko’s fairy tale script was also voted to the Black List, Hollywood’s list of best unproduced screenplays.
We’ll wait to hear more about this project, hopefully starting with a title. Stanfield stars in FX’s Atlanta, and will next be seen in some very exciting projects, including Rian Johnson‘s murder mystery Knives Out, and the Safdie brothers’ Adam Sandler-led drama, Uncut Gems.
Cooke will next star alongside John Boyega in the indie drama A Naked Singularity, an adaptation of a superb book by Sergio De La Pava, before appearing alongside Riz Ahmed in The Sound Of Metal, a film about a drummer losing his hearing.
