Per Deadline, Netflix has landed the rights to the film Scarlet, which is expected to be the next project helmed by Sundance breakout star Alice Waddington.
Waddington reportedly came up with the idea and will write the script alongside Kristen SaBerre. The project was acquired for Aggregate’s Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan. They will produce alongside Waddington. Aggregate already has first-look deal in place with Netflix.
The plot is being kept under wraps as of now. But this is still exciting news for Netflix. Waddington directed the acclaimed short Disco Inferno, but really broke out earlier this year when her feature debut Paradise Hills – starring Emma Roberts, Awkwafina, and Milla Jovovich – was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival.
The story is set on an isolated island where a woman wakes up and finds herself at Paradise Hills, a facility where high-class families send their daughters to become perfect versions of themselves. The facility is run by the mysterious Duchess and offers calibrated treatments including etiquette classes, vocal lessons, and in order to resolve all physical and emotional shortcomings within two months.
The film has been praised for its feminist approach and lavish production design. Samuel Goldwyn Films have acquired the rights to the film, and should release it later this year.
So Waddington has quickly become a sought-after name. Netflix are probably ecstatic that they’ve secured her next film. It should be just as exciting for cinephiles, as Waddington is already known to push boundaries, something that may have been restricted by another studio. Netflix however, are known to give their filmmakers absolute control.
