“Frozen” is the brand new single from London-based singer-songwriter Hedara, taken from her forthcoming debut EP titled Slow, which is due for release later this summer. With support already coming from BBC Radio 2, Clash Magazine, Earmilk and adidas, Hedara is one to watch as one who embodies the hard-working spirit that’s needed to thrive in the music industry in 2019.
According to Hedara, “‘Frozen’ is a very honest view of a relationship that’s fucked or broken. The real truth hurts, and this highlights it. It challenges the fact of staying with someone because there once was love, or leaving because love has been lost“.
Pursuing her passion for music from a young age, Hedara – aka Scarlet Billham – graduated from London’s famous BRIT School alongside Freya Ridings and others. She was enjoying a lively start to her music career, performing a number of key shows including Secret Garden Party under different alias’ and bands. It was only after a near-death experience, narrowly escaping a diabetic coma, that she learnt a harrowing lesson and took stock of what’s important in life.
Slowly finding her way back into music, she began working with different songwriters and producers before finding a connection with Carey Willetts (Dua Lipa, Freya Ridings, Dermot Kennedy). Together they co-wrote and produced 8 tracks, 3 of which now form the EP Slow. Scarlett soon sent her music to industry friend Tom Speight, who loved her sound and invited Scarlet to join him on his upcoming UK tour.
Scarlet launched the project this year with her debut single “Slow”. Her unique blend of electronica, meeting traditional songwriting garnered early critical support from the likes of Clash Magazine, Earmilk and a number of key publications on The Hype Machine.
It wasn’t long before Jo Whiley was spinning the track on BBC Radio 2. She followed up with the heart achingly beautiful “Numb”. The piano-led single was premiered by Adidas’ female artist focused blog Girls Are Awesome and again, supported by Jo Whiley on the BBC.
Riding the crest of a wave, Hedara is sharing the final single before releasing her full EP at the end of July. “Frozen” is an indication of the layers of talent Hedara possesses, as she coins a folk-leaning guitar section, propped up by analogue synth elements and electronic drums. It’s an emotive piece of songwriting that showcases all the multi-faceted talent of Hedara.
