What is this, a 90s revival? There’s already been a report this week that Adrian Lyne is developing an erotic thriller, and now there’s a serial killer thriller in the works. Transport yourself back to the mid-90s and this sort of news is completely normal. Nowadays, these genres are either relegated to television, or don’t exist at all.
Jared Leto is on board to play a serial killer opposite Denzel Washington and Rami Malek in thriller The Little Things. The project itself was already in the works, but the antagonist role hadn’t been filled. John Lee Hancock (The Highwaymen) will direct from his own screenplay.
The story revolves around Washington’s Deke, a burned-out cop who teams with Malek’s Baxter, a crack detective from the LA Sheriff’s Department, teaming up to catch Leto’s serial killer. Deke has a nose for the little things of a case, but also is known to break the rules. Baxter has dark secrets of his own.
Does the premise sounds pretty generic? Sure. And is Hancock a little too workmanlike to get excited about a film of his? Maybe. But it’s still an original serial killer thriller starring three Oscar winners. Those kinds of movies don’t come along as much as they used to.
Leto is either a perfect choice to play a killer, or an awful pick, depending on who you ask. Those who have seen him in Blade Runner 2049 and Chapter 27 (as John Lennon‘s killer, Mark David Chapman) would argue he’s a great fit. Those who are still scarred by his Joker from Suicide Squad may disagree. As long as he isn’t asked to ham it up, we should probably be fine.
The Little Things is expected to enter production this autumn, once Malek finishes work on Bond 25.
