20 years after the first one, the fourth chapter of the sci-fi franchise The Matrix has been confirmed.
To remind you of what we are talking about, The Matrix tells the story of a hacker, Neo, who discovers that humans are trapped inside a simulated reality controlled by artificial beings.
The iconic franchise saw a hit trilogy, which ended in 2003 with The Matrix Revolution. The trilogy has grossed a combined $1.6billion at the box office.
According to Lana Wachowski, who created the franchise with her sister Lilly, ‟Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now”, in reference to the realisation of a fourth installment of The Matrix.
Earlier this year, Lilly Wachowski said: “I like it when stories go out into the world and then come back to you in different ways. I mean, that’s what storytelling is all about. I’m part of a bigger thing. I don’t have any ownership over stuff like that, so whatever story anybody wants to tell, I can’t wait to hear. I hope it’s better than the original”.
Lana will stay on to direct the film, and co-write the script with sci-fi novelists Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell. Furthermore, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss are reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity.
The film’s production is due to starts in 2020, so we could be in for a long wait, but in the meantime, you can re-watch (or discover) Matrix trilogy to get you all caught up for the upcoming fourth instalment.
