Ahead of its Venice film festival premiere, Warner Bros delivered what fans of Joker really want: a new trailer. And it was released on Wednesday.
As its final trailer, Todds Phillips wanted to show the movie’s distinctive tone without revealing too much. So, we know that it’s set in a indeterminate time period between the 1970s and ‘80s to “present Gotham as this kind of broken-down city”. The film seems to be much more serious than Joker’s traditional comics.
“We didn’t follow anything from the comic books, which people are gonna be mad about”, director Phillips said. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man”.
Joaquin Phoenix lost a lost of weight for the role and had a deep introspection about the protagonist. Indeed he said, “There are certain areas of the character that frankly still aren’t clear to me, and I’m fine with that. There’s something enjoyable about not having to answer a lot of those questions. It requires a certain amount of participation from the audience that feels different“.
Aside from Phoenix, the cast also includes Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Brian Tyree Henry. Joker hits theaters on October 4. In the meantime, watch the trailer here:
