The musical contributions of Elton John are to be celebrated with a new set of Royal Mail stamps.
The rock legend is only the second musician to be given the honour, after David Bowie received his own stamps in 2017.
Eight of the Elton stamps feature images of some of his most popular album covers, including his 1972 breakthrough Honky Château, which includes the track “Rocket Man”.
Other albums in the collection include Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – featuring hits like “Candle in the Wind” and “Bennie and the Jets” – along with Caribou, Made in England and Songs from the West Coast.
A further four stamps will be available in a miniature sheet, paying homage to his live performances from the last five decades.
They include images from the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium in 1975, the Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace in 2012 and his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour at Madison Square Garden in 2018.
Sir Elton, who received a knighthood in 1998, said: “To say I was surprised when Royal Mail got in touch is an understatement”.
“Never did I think I’d appear on a stamp…! It’s wonderful, a great honour”.
Royal Mail spokesperson Philip Parker said: “Elton is one of the most successful British solo artists of all time. He has recorded some of the best-known songs in pop history such as Candle In The Wind and Rocket Man”.
“Our stamps issued today showcase some of his most iconic albums and celebrate his fantastic musical contribution”.
