Peter Capaldi Joins James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ | Film News

James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad continues to add actors to its increasingly mammoth cast. Peter Capaldi has now joined the project in an undisclosed role.

Gunn’s film is looking to make a clean break from 2016’s Suicide Squad, which was panned and a laughable attempt by DC to make their own version of Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy from the MCU. Having cycled through possible directors, which inexplicably included Mel Gibson, they eventually just decided to get Gunn himself.

Since his hiring, the film has been described as not quite a sequel, and not quite a reboot. It’s probably being designed to make us forget about the 2016 version altogether, but still retain the characters that worked from that film, such as Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn. Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney are also returning.

Joining Capaldi as new faces are Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi and Flula Borg. John Cena was reportedly in talks for a role back in April, but nothing has come of that since. We’ll wait and see with that one. And we’re also waiting to hear even a nugget about the plot.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit cinemas on August 6, 2021.
