It is not the first time that Extinction Rebellion has raised its voice during London Fashion Week. Indeed, their aim has always been to “shut down” the fashion shows in an attempt to raise awareness about the environmental damage caused by the fashion industry. One of their more recent protests saw the activist group cover themselves in fake blood and stage their death outside the London Fashion Week official venue.
On September 17, during the last day of the famous fashion week, another Extinction Rebellion protest dominated the scene. This time, the group staged a funeral to mark the end of the event. Starting from Trafalgar Square, activists stopped outside of the BFC Show Space which hosts a large number of London Fashion Week shows.
The protesters used two coffins covered with colored flowers. One of these was employed to stage the death of “our future” due to the ongoing environmental catastrophe of which many fashion industries are responsible, while the other one reported the words “LFW 1983-2019” on the cover.
The group of environmentalists said: “We ask all citizens, including the sector itself, to ask for an end to London Fashion Week and to rest the toxic consumption system forever“.
It’s time to make fashion a more sustainable institution or someone will “put the fashion system to rest“, according to the group.
