John Boyega has signed on to star in Netflix thriller Rebel Ridge, which hails from Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier. Boyega will play an ex-marine who takes on a group of dirty cops. It’s being described as a “high-velocity thriller that explores systemic American injustices through bone-breaking action sequences and dark humour”.
This is Saulnier’s second collaboration with Netflix. The streaming giant released his last film, Hold The Dark, which starred Jeffrey Wright and Riley Keough. He’s best known for his revenge thriller Blue Ruin and his horror film Green Room; he like colours too, it seems. Most recently he helmed multiple episodes of True Detective season 3.
Boyega hasn’t yet found great success outside of the Star Wars franchise (not that he needs to, really), but maybe this could be it. He starred in Kathryn Bigelow‘s Detroit but got lost amid the ensemble cast. He also starred in Pacific Rim: Uprising, but that film has already fallen off the map. If he’s looking to work with a director that will at least make something memorable, Saulnier is a good choice.
There’s nothing else to report regarding Rebel Ridge. Expect to see some co-stars announced down the line, along with a release date.
