Jon M. Chu To Direct YA Romance ‘Permanent Record’ For Warner Bros. | Film News

Jon M. Chu is on a good run right now thanks to the success of Crazy Rich Asians. He’s already helming the upcoming adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s musical In The Heights, and now he’s got another project on the docket. Chu is reportedly in talks to direct a feature adaptation of Mary H.K. Choi‘s bestselling YA romance novel Permanent Record.

The novel explores how social media can influence relationships. It follows star-crossed lovers Pablo Rind and Leanna Smart, who meet one chilly morning at 5 a.m. at a bodega where Pablo works. He’s a college dropout who’s buried in debt, while Leanna is a social media superstar, having been famous since she was a child.

As an adult, her life is a blur of private planes, photo shoots and hotel rooms. But when she finds herself in Pablo’s bodega, they’re just two people, and they soon become a couple, though social media poses a unique challenge that sends each of them on a complicated journey of self-discovery.

Choi will reportedly pen the adaptation herself, while Chu will also produce under his Chu Studios Productions banner. The book was only published this autumn, and promptly debuted on the New York Times Bestsellers List in September.

While Chu is best known for Crazy Rich Asians, which grossed over $250 million worldwide, he’s also directed entries in the Step Up, G.I. Joe, and Now You See Me franchises. In total, his films have grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, so he’s got an impressive track record of box office success, something that studios certainly look fondly upon.

We’ll wait for more news regarding Permanent Record. Expect it to be a hot property for actors in the right age range. Chu’s In The Heights adaptation, which stars Anthony Ramos, Leslie Grace, Corey Hawkins, Melissa Barrera and Jimmy Smits, hits cinemas June 26, 2020.
