Following an onslaught of extremely negative reviews, the new feature film Cats has been criticised to the point of ridicule once again after an image of a major mistake in the film was revealed online.
One of the feline characters, played by Dame Judi Dench, has been spotted with incomplete CGI fur in one of the scenes near the end of the film, with her distinctly human hand – complete with the actor’s wedding ring – displayed noticeably on the end of her furry arm.
This mistake comes after reports that director Tom Hooper had requested that Universal send an “improved” version of the film to more than a thousand cinemas.
Hooper admitted that the film was completed just hours before its premier in New York last week, which could explain the many errors he hoped to clear up in the improved version including the hiccup with Dame Judi Dench’s conspicuously human hand.
The film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s successful musical features big stars including Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift, and is estimated to have cost between $85-100 million (£65m-77 million).
Despite the big budget and popular faces, the film has received savage reviews from critics, and has fared just as badly at the box office, grossing just $2.6m (£1.9m) on its opening day. Film critic Tim Robey actually gave the film zero stars in his review.
The new version of Cats, which apparently features “some improved visual effects” is expected to be shown in most cinemas from Christmas Eve onwards.
