Another Chucky reboot of sorts is coming. Only a year after last year’s Child’s Play remake hit cinemas, a Chucky TV series is coming to SYFY. However, unlike that film, this one will have the involvement of original Child’s Play creator Don Mancini. He will write and direct the pilot, and also serve as showrunner.
The first Child’s Play movie sparked a franchise that led to six sequels made from 1990 to 2017. Judging by SYFY’s press release, the show unsurprisingly sounds pretty similar to the films:
“A vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster”.
How will that premise sustain an entire show, you ask? Well it lasted seven movies and a reboot, so Chucky has shown impressive durability along with his knife skills. It’s unclear right now whether series regulars and Mancini favourites Brad Dourif or Jennifer Tilly will return for the show. Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks for USA & SYFY, said in a statement:
“The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years. We are excited to once again partner with Nick and UCP on this new SYFY series, and are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to television for the first time with the original creators”.
The “Nick” McCumber refers to is Nick Antosca of SYFY’s Channel Zero, who will serve as executive producer alongside Harley Peyton (Twin Peaks) and David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus). The show doesn’t yet have a premiere date in place.
