Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw director David Leitch has his next project in place. It’s an updated remake of the 70s-era show Kung Fu, which starred David Carradine and ran for three seasons.
The show ran between 1972 and 1975 and starred Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk and martial arts master who must go on the run after his mentor is murdered. Caine finds himself in the American West where he goes in search of his brother. He gets caught up in various disputes and fights during his travels, and he’s often required to put his martial arts skills to good use.
The remake – which sees Leitch re-teaming with Universal after Hobbs & Shaw – will be set in the present, unlike the TV series which was set in the 1800s. A writer will reportedly be announced soon, but that’s pretty much all the info right now.
It’s a somewhat unusual series to remake. Unless you’re of a certain age you probably haven’t even heard of Kung Fu, so it’s not like this is going to have much of a built-in audience. Expect Leitch to update the show quite dramatically anyway. Considering his penchant for action, this new version of Kung Fu will likely be a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride with little resemblance to the original series.
