Per THR, Anaconda is the latest movie to be getting the remake treatment. Snow White And The Huntsman writer Evan Daugherty is reportedly on board to pen the script. The 1997 movie originally starred Jon Voight battling a large snake in the Amazon.
At first glance, this seems like odd news. Why remake Anaconda? Why not just make another monster-ish movie? Well first, Daugherty’s take on the material is apparently a “reimagining”, not a sequel or remake, and Sony’s Colombia Pictures is looking for a movie in the style of Warner Bros.’ The Meg. That film grossed $530 million worldwide on a $130 million budget.
Still, it shows the state of Hollywood that when an original monster movie does well, the move isn’t to commission more original monster movies, it’s to remake old ones. Not only that, but Anaconda hasn’t really lasted long in the cultural consciousness, so is it even worth remaking? Why not just make an original film?
If Sony wants this version to be more like The Meg – a film where Jason Statham battles a massive dinosaur shark – then expect Anaconda to have a lot more scope than its original premise.
Daugherty originally penned his Snow White And The Huntsman script back in 2003. He had to wait a decade for it to finally hit the silver screen – luckily for him, it became a hit. Since then he’s been a co-writer for Divergent, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot.
