David Ayer is not returning for the recently-announced Bright sequel at Netflix, but he is collaborating with the streaming giant once again. Ayer will write and direct an adaptation of Harlan Coben‘s bestselling suspense novel Six Years.
The story follows a brokenhearted college professor who attends the funeral of his ex-girlfriend’s husband. However, having not seen her for six years, he discovers that the grieving widow isn’t the woman he remembers.
Netflix has already had success with Coben adaptations. The streamer adapted The Stranger and Safe into popular shows, and will also release a six-part Polish series based on Coben’s mystery novel The Woods later this year.
Ayer got on the map for his screenplay for Training Day in 2001. Since then he’s gone onto direct movies such as End Of Watch and Fury, although he’s got into a serious a rut recently, having directed panned films such as Suicide Squad and the aforementioned Bright.
His next project is a gritty indie titled The Tax Collector, which will star Shia LaBeouf. He’s also developing a remake of The Dirty Dozen, as well as WWII tank battle tale El-Alamein, but both of those will likely take a back seat to Six Years for now.
Ayer will produce the film alongside Chris Long through their Cedar Park banner. We’ll see if adapting Coben gets Ayer’s career – in terms of quality, at least – back on track.
