…And we all thought J.K. Simmons reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson from the Sam Raimi-era Spider-Man films at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home was a shock!
In very surprising news, Jamie Foxx is reportedly reprising his role as Electro – from the unrelated Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – for the next MCU/Sony Spider-Man movie. Huh?
The two Garfield Spider-Man movies are mostly weird relics at this point. Everyone remembers the original Raimi/Tobey Maguire trilogy as the cinematic debut of Spider-Man, and the MCU/Sony films have arguably become the most popular incarnation of the character yet. So the two Amazing Spider-Man movies awkwardly mushed in-between are forgotten anomalies.
Which is why it’s so strange that Marvel and Sony are bringing Foxx back. It seems unlikely that anyone even remembers he played Electro. Maybe that’s the point? In that film, Foxx first played a bumbling nerd and then, after an elaborate accident, became a kind of robotic Aladdin-like genie who’s a living electric capacitor.
Not only that, but The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was not well received and essentially killed the Garfield incarnation of the franchise. This is all just bizarre. No one would have even batted an eye if Sony had re-cast Electro.
There is talk among Marvel-heads that Simmons’ return as Jameson reveals some sort of post-Endgame parallel universe within the MCU, so who knows, maybe this is related to that?
We’ll have to wait and see what Marvel and Sony really have planned for this third Spider-Man instalment, which, if all goes according to plan, will begin filming in Atlanta this autumn with returning actors like Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori reprising their roles. Jon Watts is directing once again.
Foxx just got done with another superhero project in the form of Netflix’s Project Power. He’ll next be seen starring in and directing sports comedy All-Star Weekend.
