HBO Max has greenlit a new Green Lantern series to add to the burgeoning slate of shows on its nascent streaming platform. Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith will co-write the show, with the latter also serving as showrunner.
The show will revolve around the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott — the latter of which was Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, will be a gay man — and more. The series will also introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
Worth noting is that neither Hal Jordan nor John Stewart are mentioned here. One potential reason why is because Green Lantern has been a character long rumoured for the DCEU – or what’s left of it, anyway. It’s now being referred to as the DC Multiverse – so they may be saving that version of the character for the big screen.
HBO has ordered 10 episodes of the series. This is far from the only DC-related prestige series the streaming platform has in the works. It also has The Batman spinoff revolving around the Gotham Police Department and the John Cena-led Peacemaker series, which will focus on his character he’ll debut in James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad.
Obviously HBO will be hoping this series fares far better than the Ryan Reynolds-led 2011 Green Lantern movie that has become infamous at this point. However, it won’t be as far removed from it as you might think, as Guggenheim actually co-wrote that movie. He’ll certainly be happy to be getting a chance to right that wrong.
