Watchmen actor and former Best Actor Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons has signed on to star in Netflix’s adaptation of Robert Harris‘ bestselling 2017 novel, Munich. Not to be confused with the 2005 Steven Spielberg film of the same name.
The film is set in the fall of 1938 with Europe standing on the brink of war, Adolf Hitler preparing to invade Czechoslovakia, and Neville Chamberlain‘s government desperately seeking a peaceful solution. As the pressure builds, British civil servant Hugh Legat and German diplomat Paul von Hartmann travel to Munich for an emergency conference.
As negotiations begin, the two old friends find themselves at the centre of a web of political subterfuge and very real danger. Irons will play Chamberlain while George McKay (1917) has already signed on to play Legat. The cast also includes some impressive character actors, and interestingly, Martin Wuttke, who portrayed Hitler in Quentin Tarantino‘s Inglorious Basterds, will play the role once again here.
Christian Schwochow (The Crown) will direct the film from a script by Ben Power (The Hollow Crown). Harris said in a statement:
“It’s great to see an actor of Jeremy Irons‘ stature playing Neville Chamberlain. This will be the first time a major movie has gone beyond the cult of Winston Churchill and tried to show Chamberlain in a more sympathetic light”.
Irons won that aforementioned Best Actor statue for courtroom/mystery thriller Reversal Of Fortune in 1990. He’s always been actor of much gravitas and class, and will no doubt bring those same qualities to Munich. Shooting in Germany is already underway before it later shifts to the U.K. Netflix reportedly plans to release the film sometime in 2021.
