Sons Of Anarchy creator and showrunner Kurt Sutter has been tapped by both Netflix and Blumhouse to helm This Beast, a drama that will mark his feature directorial debut.
The plot was reportedly inspired by The Beast of Gévaudan, a true story about a mysterious beast that terrorized a French village in the 1760s. Naturally, the film is set in the 18th century, but in an English village besieged by a mysterious and elusive beast.
Dozens of innocent people are slaughtered and the mayhem is driven to puritanical heights by religious fanaticism. The impossible task of killing the beast falls to a lowly trapper who promises he can stop the carnage. But for him this hunt is not only a professional mission, it’s a personal one.
“Bringing my disturbing, familial story sensibility into the Blumhouse world just seemed like something that had to happen”, Sutter said in a statement. “And This Beast is the perfect project for that marriage. And Netflix is the perfect venue for that bloody ceremony”.
Blumhouse’s Jason Blum will produce the film along with Carla Hacken, who will produce under her Paper Pictures banner. Netflix will release the film. Blum said in his own statement:
“We’ve long been fans of Kurt and his unparalleled storytelling — that’s both visceral and packs an emotional punch. We’re excited that Blumhouse is producing his first feature for Netflix”.
This Beast sounds about as far from Sons Of Anarchy as one can get, but it does sound interesting for a first feature. Sutter does have some experience on the big screen, just not in the director’s chair, as he previously penned the script for the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing drama, Southpaw. We’ll see what he can do now that he’s totally in charge.
