Takashi Murakami has joined the NFT world with his fist ever Non-Fungible Token sale. A trendy movement in the art world today, NFTs are a way to sell a digital creation or a piece of art in a dematerialised way by attributing an exclusive property title to the owner.
The Japanese artist is selling a piece of art representing his emblematic flower, but in a way influenced by the Nintendo Universe, as he was inspired by his kids playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons with their friends.
Speaking about this moment with his children, Murakami says, “They were watching some fireworks display within the game while talking with their school friends, who they could no longer meet in person, through Zoom, admiring how beautiful it was […] I saw the reality of the shifting values when I realized that these children could discern beauty within a virtual world”.
For the realisation of this artwork, the Japanese contemporary artist has set a partnership with Yoshihisa Hashimoto, the famous video games designer and programer that notably created Sonic Unleashed.
Murakami needed someone who is particularly familiar with the video game culture and who is steeped in it. Together the two Japanese designers have designed Murakami’s emblematic flower in Pixel 24 x 24.
The drawing, which comes in 108 variations, has a very childish look, with a simple design and pastel colours reminiscent of Nintendo video games evoking a sense of nostalgia.
Murakami‘s NFT debut with this singular piece of art is already causing quit the stir, with bids already over $200,000 before the Easter break. You can check out the pieces on OpenSea here.
