The 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is fast approaching. On Thursday, June 3, Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the world’s leading film festival, revealed the 2021 edition of its official selection, which is eagerly awaited after a year of silence during which the Covid-19 crisis forced the festival to be canceled.
From July 6-17, the Cannes jury, chaired by Spike Lee, will have the difficult task of awarding the prizes.
If we already knew that Annette by Leos Carax with Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver, Benedetta by Paul Verhoeven with Virginie Efira, and The French Dispatch by Wes Anderson and its 5-star cast would be in competition, we now know their competitors.
This year, the selection is a little richer than the previous ones. Thierry Frémaux revealed that his teams had received some 2,300 films, compared to the usual 1,800, and all the categories of this “very international” official selection include 61 films.
Among the films in this prestigious competition, we find Italian 2001 Palme d’Or winner Nanni Moretti, who returns with Tre Piani, A Hero by the Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi.
We also have seven French films with France by Bruno Dumont, starring Léa Seydoux, Tout S’est Bien passé by François Ozon and Titane by the director Julia Ducournau.
A new category has been created this year under the name of ‘Cannes Premières’ to welcome “established filmmakers who, for various reasons, come to show their films in parallel with the competition”, said Thierry Frémaux.
This includes Arnaud Desplechin‘s Tromperie, Matthieu Amalric‘s Serre-moi fort, and Eva Husson‘s Mothering Sunday.
An ephemeral “environmental” section should also join this selection in the coming days as the festival has announced a series of measures to reduce its environmental footprint for this summer edition.
