MGM have outbid three other studios to secure the rights to an untitled buddy comedy action pitch that will star Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, who pitched the idea themselves.
The duo reportedly pitched the idea all over Hollywood this week, which revolves around the actors playing brothers in a Lethal Weapon-esque buddy cop comedy that would likely shoot in Hawaii.
Jonathan Tropper, who has written the upcoming Ryan Reynolds film The Adam Project, is on board to pen the script.
Bautista tweeted out the basic idea back in August, but it only gained traction this week. Bautista and Momoa are reportedly good friends. They starred together in the Apple series See, and both appeared in this year’s Dune, although they didn’t share any scenes.
An action comedy starring Bautista and Momoa is by no means a bad call, although it’s a little concerning that this pretty basic idea is causing waves in Hollywood. I think most fans could have told you that putting two charismatic, muscular actors who are also real-life friends in an action comedy was worth a studio taking a shot on.
There’s currently no director attached, but the hope is that the film will shoot in 2023 once the duo are free from working on their respective franchises. Momoa is currently shooting the Aquaman sequel, while Bautista has a third Guardians Of The Galaxy film and the newly announced Dune sequel in the works.
