Gina Rodriguez To Star In ‘Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown’ TV Adaptation

Apple TV+ is reportedly developing a TV adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar‘s 1988 film Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown with Gina Rodriguez on board to produce and star. The project will mark Almodóvar’s first foray into television after a film career that has earned him multiple Oscar nominations and two wins for 1999’s All About My Mother and 2002’s Talk To Her.

His 1988 black comedy was arguably the film that gave him international attention away from his native Spain. It revolves around Pepe who, alongside a cast of wild characters, tries to balance life, love and other complications. It’s loosely based on the 1930 French play The Human Voice. Rodriguez will play Pepe in the adaptation, which will be a mix of English and Spanish.

Almodóvar’s El Deseo banner and Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will Productions will produce alongside 3Pas Studios and Lionsgate TV. Noelle Valdivia has been hired to write the series.

Rodriguez starred in sci-fi thriller Awake last year, and has Amazon romantic comedy I Want You Back due out on Friday, February 11. She also currently stars in Diary Of A Future President on Disney+. She’s probably best known for starring in Jane The Virgin, which ran from 2014-2019, producing 100 episodes.

The timing of this adaptation is interesting as Almodóvar recently signed on to direct his first English-language feature film, A Manuel For Cleaning Women, which has Cate Blanchett attached to star. We’ll see if these two projects help introduce a new audience to Almodóvar’s work.
