Forrest Gump trio Tom Hanks, director Robert Zemeckis, and writer Eric Roth are teaming up once again. This time it’s for an adaptation of Richard McGuire‘s 2014 graphic novel, Here, the first time the trio have worked together for thirty years.
Here tells the story of a single room over an expansive period of time. The novel dives into the stories of the people who occupied the room from the past and into the distant future. It originally began as a 6-page comic strip that McGuire published in 1989, but was extended into a graphic novel in 2014.
Hanks and Gary Goetzman‘s production company Playtone will produce alongside as well as Zemeckis’ company Imagemovers.
The film adaptation is still in early development, but it reportedly has heavy interest from multiple competing studios and streamers and will auction soon. That interest makes complete sense, as Forrest Gump cleaned up at the Oscars after its 1994 release and quickly became a classic, even if its merit and intentions have been hotly debated since.
Hanks and Zemeckis have since teamed up a number of times – on Cast Away, The Polar Express, and Disney’s upcoming live-action Pinocchio reboot.
Roth has written a bunch of notable films since Gump, including The Insider, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, A Star Is Born, and Dune. He’s also penning Martin Scorsese‘s upcoming crime drama Killers Of The Flower Moon.
Hanks has a busy slate of projects lined up which, along with Pinocchio, include Baz Luhrmann‘s Elvis, Wes Anderson‘s Asteroid City, and the English-language remake of A Man Called Ove.
Even though the industry has changed, Hanks is still a beloved star, so Here should garner plenty of interest. No doubt there will be plenty more info on the project to come.
