The quick success of A24’s newly released animated film Marcel The Shell With Shoes On has already seen its director, Dean Fleischer Camp, land a big gig. He’s been hired to direct the live-action adaptation of Lilo and Stitch for Disney. Chris Kekaniokalani Bright is also in negotiations to write the script.
Released in 2002, the original version is an animated sci-fi comedy that followed Lilo, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who is raised by her older sister Nani after they lose their parents in a car crash. Things take a turn when she adopts Stitch, an extraterrestrial entity impersonating a dog.
The film familiarized its global audience with the Hawaiian concept of ‘ohana’ – extended family. The massive success of the film spawned a franchise that includes three direct-to-video sequels and three television series. The inevitable live-action film was first announced in 2018, however there haven’t been many updates until now.
Camp’s new film Marcel The Shell With Shoes On is a unique entity – an animated mockumentary based on the 2010 short film of the same name. It focuses on Marcel, an anthropomorphic shell living with his grandmother Connie. It’s only had a limited release so far, but has already garnered critical acclaim and earned over $1 million.
Disney saw their opening to grab Camp for a project of their own, and didn’t hesitate to take it.
Lilo and Stitch will join the upcoming slate of Disney’s live-action remakes of their animated classics, which includes Pinocchio and Peter Pan & Wendy later this year, The Little Mermaid in 2023, and Snow White, Hercules, Bambi, and many more down the line.
