Joachim Rønning In Talks To Helm Jared Leto In Sci-Fi Sequel ‘Tron: Ares’

A new Tron film is reportedly in the works, and Disney are in early negotiations to set Joachim Rønning to direct Jared Leto in Tron: Ares. If things come together, production is looking to begin in August in Vancouver.

The sci-fi franchise began with the 1982 film which starred Jeff Bridges, and was set inside the computer program called the Grid, where a computer hacker is abducted and forced to participate in gladiatorial games. The first one was more of a cult hit, though its special effects were seen as game-changing at the time.

That cult following only grew over time, leading Disney to develop a sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010. Bridges reprised his role, while Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde joined the franchise. That film grossed $400 million globally, and was praised for its effects and the Daft Punk soundtrack. It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for Disney to move on a sequel.

Rønning is a company favourite, as he’s already helmed two Disney films and is on the verge of completing a third.

He previously directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, while he’s just about wrapping production on Young Woman and the Sea, which is about the daring journey of Gertrude Ederle, the teenager who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. That will star Daisy Ridley.

Leto also has a relationship with Disney, as he’s currently working on the new version of The Haunted Mansion.

Like its predecessor, Tron: Legacy has only grown in stature over time, and has its own cult following. It may have gotten even more eyeballs on it after director Joseph Kosinski made Top Gun: Maverick last year. We’ll see if that leads to even more box office success this time around for Tron: Ares.
