Rising Japanese artist, Cono, has made her official debut with the release of her dynamic first single, “Slapstick,” along with an accompanying music video on April 25, 2023.
This playful and engaging song blends elements of J-pop, rock from the 2000s, and R&B melodies, presenting a narrative dichotomy by separating the song’s lyrics from the music video’s story.
The music video, conceptualized by director Kashimae, presents an intricately animated tale of a young woman who breaks off her engagement on the day of her wedding. The narrative follows the woman through a sequence of adventures that only conclude when she comes to appreciate the significance of her partner in her life.
At only 19 years old, Cono exhibits a passion for music that rivals established artists. She commenced her journey in 2021 by independently performing on YouTube, where she was quickly noticed by TuneCore Japan, Japan’s largest music distributor.
Despite this, she ultimately chose to embark on her professional career in 2023 under the wing of Japanese music production house, “EGOCLUB.”
Despite minimal promotion, “Slapstick” has gained popularity on multiple platforms since its release, including YouTube, TikTok, and Bilibili. This success led to Cono being nominated in the ‘promising artist’ category at the TuneCore Japan music awards in 2023.
We certainly ought to keep an eye on Cono’s forthcoming projects and events, as she is poised to make significant strides in the music industry.
