Nigerian Canadian Afro-Soul artist, KAR33M, explores the notion of artistic liberty in his latest single, “That Feeling”, which was unveiled on July 3, 2023.
The song blooms into a melodic lullaby as it meditates on the concept of unbounded self-expression. As KAR33M puts it, “Artistic freedom equates to peace of mind. It implies living fully through my art, unencumbered by the need for any other employment that diverges from my true calling.”
Hailing from Ottawa, KAR33M reveals his perceptive analysis of the Afrobeats scene and how he ingeniously mirrors it in his music.
His fascination with music was kindled at an early age, as he was immersed in the melodious universe of renowned artists like King Sunny Ade, KWAM 1, Usher, 50 Cent, and Ja Rule. His diverse influences span across afrobeats, hip-hop, R&B, and soul genres, all of which inform KAR33M’s unique sound.
His inaugural music releases traverse a range of themes such as existentialism, love, and Black identity. This exploration is significantly encapsulated in his debut Neo-Soul EP, WHOAMI?, and the afrosoul LP, Ala.
The latter provides a creative interpretation of an African diasporic narrative set against the backdrop of a world shattered by societal disparities. Alongside his music, KAR33M is also the founder of Woke Studios, a record label dedicated to nurturing Afro-Diverse musicians in their artistic journey.
KAR33M’s dynamic performances on various national stages have earned him numerous accolades and widespread media attention.
His notable achievements include the Spirit of the Capital Culture and Arts Award, bestowed upon him by Madame Michalle Jean, a former Governor General of Canada, in 2019.
He also earned recognition as the half-time performer for Ottawa Fury FC games and the festival kick-off musician for the Canadian Basketball League.
