Party Pest, an emerging post-punk music group known for their unpredictable and chaotic style, has just released their latest single, “In The Shadows“.
This track is a harmonious blend of jangly guitar hooks, skating synth sounds, fever-inducing bass hooks, and loosely wild drums, creating an abyss of dystopian despair. It is the second release from their debut LP, Uninvited, set to launch in early 2024 via Psychic Hysteria in Australia and Beast Records globally.
The single, both lyrically despondent and musically exuberant, paints a picture of impending doom. It delves into themes of hiding from various threats – whether internal struggles or external forces like corporate greed and environmental destruction.
The song poses a rhetorical question about the source of our fears, leaving listeners to ponder whether we are running from our own tortured souls or from larger, more menacing societal forces.
“In The Shadows” is described as the perfect soundtrack to our collective decline into madness, set against the backdrop of a burning planet. It captures the essence of chaos and despair that defines the current era, yet does so with a sound that is engaging and energetic.
Party Pest’s earlier release this year, “Party Pest Theme,” set the stage for their unique sound. The group comprises former members of The Reprobettes, Jemma Jives (drums & vocals) and Sally Balhorn (guitar & vocals), along with Julia Watt (bass) and Kate Alexander (synth). Their style is heavily influenced by post-punk bands such as The Slits, ESG, Kleenex, The Cure, and The B52’s.
The upcoming album, Uninvited, promises to be a mix of post-punk irreverence with discordant melodies, primal drumbeats, bold bass grooves, and synthesised sonic mayhem. Party Pest’s approach to music is described as a celebration of life as they know it, with a live performance that is as unpredictable and wild as their music suggests.
