Ships Have Sailed, the indie rock duo known for their uplifting and buoyant music, is back with a new single titled “Reflections.” The song offers listeners a deep look into human resilience and connection.
Will Carpenter, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, explains the inspiration behind the song. He recalls his childhood in poverty, filled with anxiety and uncertainty. Yet, he finds solace in the peaceful moments of his past, such as camping trips with friends. Carpenter reflects, “We would climb up a mountain and lay under the stars, sharing our hopes and dreams.”
These childhood experiences have shaped Carpenter’s creative journey. He has built a better life for himself, chasing his dreams and building a family. Reflecting on his past has been crucial in his songwriting process. “It’s a miracle I’m still here,” he says, adding that it’s miraculous that any of us exist. Each person is a unique miracle, interacting and reflecting off one another.
Ships Have Sailed is made up of Carpenter and drummer Art Andranikyan. They have released a diverse collection of albums, EPs, and singles over the years. Their music consistently evokes a desire to be heard and enjoyed. The band’s sound has evolved into sincere indie rock with a pop structure.
During the pandemic, the duo released the album “Ages,” co-produced by Dan Sadin. It marked a significant step in their musical journey. When tours were on hold, they hosted a high-quality live virtual concert, resulting in a live album.
Last year, the band released several singles, including “Silence,” featured on the Season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy. They also released “Get Loud,” which won the grand prize in the USA Songwriting Competition and was featured by the LA Kings.
Now, with “Reflections,” Ships Have Sailed continues to explore meaningful themes. Carpenter reflects on his past and the resilience that has shaped him. He believes that our experiences and connections with others define us. This new track is a reminder of the importance of reflecting on our journeys and appreciating the moments that bring us together.
