Grace Wales Bonner’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, presented at Paris Fashion Week, draws deeply from history and legacy, honouring Althea McNish. The new designs blend a tropical aesthetic with Savile Row tailoring, enhanced with metallic and sequin embellishments.
The success seems almost predestined. The British designer unveiled her latest summer collection on Wednesday at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, during men’s fashion week.
The Spring/Summer 2025 collection further develops her vision of masculine elegance. Her fashion is subtle, precisely crafted, and flawlessly executed, with every detail carefully considered, from the pleats in the jeans to the T-shirts peeking out from under the jackets.
Bonner’s approach to design, developed during her time at Central Saint Martins in London, often pays tribute to significant figures in Black history. For her spring-summer 2025 collection, she honored Althea McNish, an artist from Trinidad who became the first Black British textile designer.
After celebrating figures like James Baldwin and Josephine Baker, Bonner turned her attention to McNish, a less immediately recognizable figure in French culture.
Known for her intellectual depth and meticulous research, Bonner drew inspiration from McNish’s personal wardrobe, which became the foundation for this collection that evokes seaside vacations while showcasing her meticulous attention to detail. “Creating clothes involves viewing research as an artistic or spiritual practice“, she shared.
Since starting her collaboration with adidas in 2020, Bonner has consistently released hits. Since her debut in Paris in January 2023, Bonner’s shows have remained intimate yet impactful, showcasing her international prestige.
This show also introduced new adidas models by Wales Bonner. She reinterpreted the classic Samba and Superstar sneakers. The new Sambas, adorned in glittery black, and the Superstars, featuring a mid-top silhouette in khaki suede with white accents, are poised to become her next big hits.
