When Nicholas Winding Refn‘s mega-hit Drive, starring Ryan Gosling, exceeded all of fans highest expectations, it put a lot of pressure for the director to follow up with an equally amazing film. The first trailer for My Life Directed by Nicholas Winding Refn shows just how hard it was for Refn as this intimate documentary showcases his take is making Only God Forgives also starring Gosling.
Directed by Refn’s wife, Liv Corfixen, this behind-the-scenes documentary is a really interesting take on creative process that goes way beyond the kind of footage that one might find on a DVD extra. Here’s the official synopsis, “In MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN, Refn’s own deep conflict is swinging in the breeze as we witness him wrestle with the particularly challenging production of ONLY GOD FORGIVES. Directed and shot by his wife Liv Corfixen over the duration of the production and subsequent Cannes debut, MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN captures the very private and intimate moments to which a traditional documentary crew simply wouldn’t have access. The result is a fascinating, detailed look at a creative genius at work and also a portrait of a director torn between the general public’s desire for a ‘DRIVE 2’ and his own mission to explore more challenging narrative territory“.
Any movie buff is going to love something like this and I’m seriously intrigued in seeing the full flick. While Only God Forgives was a stylish and stunning creation, it lacked the focused narrative drive that Drive so wonderfully possessed, so I’d be very much up for seeing just how Refn dealt with the stress around what an audience might expect from the flick. Take a look at the trailer and see what you think!
