Firstly, let me define the word “Schlock” for you. It’s when a piece of media becomes a bit too self-indulgent; when there’s one too many dead henchmen on the floor; when you no longer fear for the safety of the hero. This episode does have “Schlock” in it, but it’s done in a self-aware way. Who, after all, is the king of schlock? Why that is Jean-Claude Van Damme, the muscles from Brussels.
This episode is very action orientated, as you could probably tell from the previous paragraph. But what else would you expect from the Wachowskis, the directors of classics such as The Matrix (and to a lesser extent their sequels) and Jupiter Ascending (I actually liked that movie by the way). With them you can tell that they like action with a capital A, and I apologize for that cliché remark with a capital C.
The scene towards the end of the episode with Capheus (Aml Ameen) getting revenge against a group of thugs who rob him of his mother’s medicine, it’s straight out of a 1980’s action movie. It even has his best friend begging him to take him with him, he even says that he would follow him anywhere. You can’t help but smile at that scene.
For an episode that was an hour long (though they all are) it felt half that length, and that’s a good sign. The scenes were fast paced and full of action, particularly towards the end. Nothing felt like filler. The previous episode, though better, did drag on in places – it had a much more contemplative, navel gazing, tone than this one. Sense8 is now available on Netflix.
