Fantastic Four (or as the poster calls it, Fant4stic) is directed by Josh Trank, and stars Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan, Toby Kebbell, and Reg E. Cathy. The movie is about how Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing gained their abilities from an alternative universe, and whilst trying to harness their powers and work as a team, they must prevent Dr. Doom from destroying earth.
I never liked the Fantastic Four. I always thought they were boring compared to other Marvel groups such as the X-Men. I hated the 2005 adaptation and its sequel as they were boring and stupid movies. When I heard that talented people such as Kate Mara and Jamie Bell were a part of this reboot, I thought that this adaptation could prove me wrong, that the Fantastic Four could turn into a fun movie.
Well my thoughts were proven wrong as this film, Fant4stic, is a terrible and a boring movie. This movie is mainly uneventful and lame, from the effects to the humor to the dialogue. The performances were bland, and some of them looked uninterested in the movie. I was surprised by the acting as the movie had some really talented people in this movie (apart from Toby Kebbell, but I’ll get to him later). Reg E. Cathy as Franklin Storm had some unintentional funny moments from his performance.
I think the main issue of Fantastic Four is that it took itself way too seriously. It’s the Fantastic 4, not Batman. It should’ve maintained that comic book feel to it like The Avengers did. The movie tried to put some humor in it, but the jokes are not funny. No one in the theater was laughing at any jokes it threw at us. It was pure silence throughout the whole movie. The Roger Corman version is a better movie than this. It’s bad, yes, but at least you can have a good time with it and not get bored.
I have to mention Toby Kebbell as Victor von Doom as he was the worst. When he becomes Doom, his dialogue is so laughably bad. Plus, he looks awful as Doom. I think Toby Kobbell may have been miscasted in this role. He didn’t look the part, nor did he act the part. By the way, with the name like Victor von Doom, of course he’s the obvious antagonist.
The only positive thing I can say about it, is that it shortened the ‘getting to know the powers’ bit that’s in every superhero origins movie. In the 2005 version, this phase made the film uneventful as it took most of the film’s time. In this version, it’s only on screen for a few minutes where the narrative flows somewhat better.
I’m not that surprised that Fantastic Four was bad, but because Marvel is doing so well with comic book movies, I was expecting better than this. Everything was a disaster. Also, I didn’t notice the regular Stan Lee cameo in it. What does that tell you about the movie? I recommend this to no one and I suggest you stay away from it.
